UPB’s Third Summer Camp Kicks off on July 22

By: Dylan Tehada

With summer just around the corner, we are excited to announce our upcoming summer camps! Each camp will feature a different focus for young hoopers to expand their knowledge of the game while also honing their physical in game skills. The third camp this summer is a 3rd-7th Grade Camp that will take place from July 22nd to July 25th.

Coach Hannah will be leading these summer camps and seeks to hone in on specific facets of the game through various themes in addition to implementing drills and in game situations for campers. These themes will vary throughout the summer and hone basic basketball IQ skills to help athletes make the jump to higher levels of competitive hoops.

Week 1’s theme will feature footwork and foundational movements, Week 2 will feature passing, cutting and finishing, and Week 3 will focus on footwork for dribble handoffs (DHO) and pick and rolls (PNR). We will focus on equipping athletes with the proper footwork and knowledge of how to execute two of the most popular plays in any offensive set: the dribble hand off and pick and roll. These offensive staples are key to executing an offense and learning the footwork and mechanics to carry out these plays will allow hoopers to make a huge contribution to their teams especially in half court offensive sets. Coach Hannah emphasizes young athletes honing in on these basketball IQ skills because she believes that dribble handoffs and pick and rolls are cornerstone play types that every young hooper should master.

“It's important for this age group to learn [dribble handoffs and pick and rolls] because as they get into middle school, and then high school there are going to be plays where they have to understand what to do coming off the dribble handoff or coming off the pick and roll and just understanding what those plays are in general,” Johnson said.

Athletes in this camp will be looking to establish good habits that will allow them to excel in the middle school level and prepare for the nuances of the high school game as well. Understanding how to execute these plays and how to apply them in game will add a whole new dimension to young hoopers’ games and allows them to add more nuance to any offense they are a part of.

We are excited to see the next generation of Bay Area hoopers show out at our upcoming summer camps and are looking forward to the new focuses and themes Coach Hannah will feature in each of the camps!
