UPBasketball’s Point Guard Clinic is Back
By: Andrea Aruino
Being a Point Guard requires a set of valuable assets in order to efficiently orchestrate a team’s offense. Point Guards have the power to change the gravity of the game, many of the other positions in basketball look to their point guards in order to set themselves up on the court. With the way this position has evolved over the past couple of years, UPBasketball wants to ensure that their players are equipped with the right skillset that will set themselves up to be a great facilitator on the court. Beginning September 2, 2025, UPBasketball will host a five-week Point Guard clinic led by former Jamestown Point Guard and current UPB Player Development Coach, Colby Vasquez.
There are several drills and activities that each point guard will be engaging in, each of which are meant to challenge and strengthen any preexisting skills that they may already possess. Players can expect a substantial amount of team and individual oriented drills. The goal is to create a strong foundation of understanding individually, in order to effectively impact their team on offense as well as defense. For individual practices, UPB’s coaches will put players in situational drills that will teach them how to make decisions on the spot. Each coach is there ready to inform players what the possible moves are and what makes sense for each play.
“It’s important to have position specific clinics because it helps players develop a unique skill set that applies to their specific play style. Every position has different responsibilities so it is important to teach players what their focus should be at their position. It’s extremely important to work on the skills and the mindset that applies to their position,” Coach Colby said.
Aside from the playmaking, shooting, and passing that comes with playing this position, it also comes with a pressure to know what one is doing at all times. Although each position plays a crucial role in a team’s success, a point guard has the ability to change the flow of the game. Due to the importance of knowing one’s role as a point guard, there will be stations focused on the mental aspect of this position and what qualities would be helpful to have if they want to be a leader on their team.
Each day has a focus of its own in order to cultivate strong lasting skillsets that trickle into game days. With Coach Colby’s collegiate experience, he is ready to instill grit and knowledge into each player. During his last season at Jamestown he averaged 23 minutes per game, 12.1 points per game, and 2.8 rebounds per game. His understanding of this position is readily available for each point guard whose goal is to positively affect the team.
“The point guard position is an extension of the coach on the court. All the plays and strategies go through the point guard to relay to the rest of the team. The focus for each day is to be the best leader you can be,” Coach Colby said.
While every point guard ultimately has the same goal on the court, each of them still possess different ways of running plays, scoring, ball handling and so much more. Coach Colby and all of UPB’s coaches know the significance of catering to the multitude of styles. Despite the differences, every point guard that comes into this clinic, no matter what style, will be able to gain a deeper understanding of how their perspective on what it means to be a point guard contributes to their team.
Ultimately, the goal of this clinic is to prepare players to be the best point guards they can be as well as having fun. A unique part of this clinic is that it groups a community of players together who have a shared goal and are willing to work as hard as possible to soak in all the experience that each coach has to share. Coach Colby hopes that each player walks away with a better sense of who they are as a point guard and why they play an important role.
