The Father’s Day Clinic Celebrates UPB Dads

By: Dylan Tehada

Fathers in the UPBasketball community have served as both role models and number one fans for all athletes who train at the facility. With Father’s Day being just around the corner, UPB will be celebrating all the fathers who have contributed to the UPB community by hosting the Father’s Day Clinic on Saturday June 15, from 9am-10am. The clinic will feature drills that allow athletes to hone their ball handling, footwork, shooting and more. Additionally, there will be fun games, scrimmages, and a guided meditation, visualization, and positive self-talk (MVP) walk through.

Fathers play an integral role in all athletes’ journeys from the moment they first pick up a basketball. At UPB, fathers who participate in the Little Hoopers clinic witness their athletes picking up a basketball for the first time and watch them develop the fundamental skills and passion for basketball that lasts a lifetime. UPB’s very own Coach Packie Turner, participates in the Little Hoopers clinic as he supports his two daughters’ basketball journeys.

“Being a part of both my daughters’ journeys into all things has been amazing. Little Hoopers allows me to share my passion and love for the game with them in a way where I get to see them experience it for the first time which is amazing. It’s special to see them struggle and figure things out on her own and be their biggest supporters,” Turner said.

Support and guidance are essential to any athlete’s journey, no matter what stage of their career that they are in. An athlete’s journey is full of ebbs and flows, but along the way through support and motivation memories are made. Coach Packie Turner himself made memories with his father, going to wrestling classes and having his dad by his side in all his endeavors. Turner is grateful to be able to be the support system for his daughters and seeks to continue making memories with them in whatever they pursue.

“I think it’s important for dads to be involved because support matters in anything, we are an anchor for them in many ways and they feed of our energy, being calm and patient with them as they experience new things, get frustrated, excited, all of the above it’s good for them to see it’s all okay,” Turner said.

The Fathers Day clinic is a great opportunity for fathers to deepen their bond with their athletes through basketball. Through various activities and honing basketball skills both fathers and athletes can learn new skills and share their passion for the game of basketball.

“Dads can look forward to getting to share their passion and love for hoops with their child or children. To have a moment where they get to really bond over something they or their athlete loves and get to show them I’m invested because you are,” Turner said. “Hopefully everyone learns something new and has a fun time doing it, breaking a little sweat!”

We look forward to seeing all the fathers at the clinic and watching them on court with their athletes! If you are interested in signing up for the Father’s Day Clinic on Saturday, June 15th, click here!
