Coach Hannah and Coach Garrett are Fired up for This Year’s Holiday Camps
By: Dylan Tehada
The holidays are right around the corner and to celebrate this time of year, UPB will be hosting its annual Holiday Camps! This year will feature two 3rd-7th camps: one is a single day that takes place on December 23rd from 9am-3pm led by Coach Garrett, and the other is a two-day camp on December 30th and 31st from 9am-12pm led by Coach Hannah. Coach Packie Turner is excited to be a part of the one-day camp and is looking forward to seeing the athletes better their game and improve on their skills.
Coach Hannah is no stranger to running camps at UPB. The trademark of all the camps that she runs is implementing a theme for athletes to focus on for the duration of camp. During this year’s Holiday Camp, Coach Hannah will focus on teaching athletes how to actively learn from their mistakes. She seeks to instill a mindset of embracing challenges and learning how to improve in the future.
“There's going to be numerous mistakes made in the span of [six and] three hours at camp, so [it is important to be] able to learn through those and feel themselves getting better… Athletes don't get better [by] just doing something that they're great at or doing something that's not a challenge. Being able to accept challenges and also learn through the mistakes is something I hope to teach athletes at this camp,” Coach Hannah said.
Coach Garrett will also be implementing some themes on court geared more towards the technical aspects of the game. During his drills, he will be honing in on teaching athletes how to score off the ball. He views movement off the ball as an invaluable skill set and seeks to teach these skills to athletes of all skill levels at camp.
The common focus that Coach Hannah and Coach Garret will share at these camps is an emphasis on watching film. Both coaches will implement a film station during camp where athletes will focus on how to watch film intentionally and apply what they learn on court. Watching film is such a valuable tool in being able to learn from others and develop IQ about the game.
By watching film, athletes can focus on the strategy and schematics of the game, allowing them to play more intentionally with a mindset of reading and reacting. Film is also a great tool to learn from mistakes and to hone in on specific aspects of your own game. Perhaps the biggest benefit to film according to Coach Garret is how it slows the game down.
“When you're watching basketball during film there's a lot of specific details that go on within the game. Once you understand those details of what is going on the game slows down for athletes,” Coach Garret said.
We are excited for all the energy that will be present in the gym this year during our Holiday Camps! Both Coach Hannah and Coach Garret are fired up to continue to help athletes realize their unlimited potential and cannot wait for all the lessons to be taught and memories to be made at camp.
